DeLyle Dvorak
University Music Professor (Retired)
Plato once stated, “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” As a music educator, DeLyle Dvorak embodied this statement, infusing his love of music with his passion for teaching. While retired from teaching after more than four decades, Dr. Dvorak remains active with his business, Dvorak Enterprises, which he launched in 1992. Dr. Dvorak started out as a band and choral music director at Delmont Public Schools in South Dakota in the early 1960s. He continued directing school bands across South Dakota until accepting the position of assistant band director at Minot State College. He went on to teach at Arizona State University, Southwestern Oklahoma State University, the Jefferson School of Performing Arts, Colorado State University and the Clark County School District. In addition, he taught at William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa from 1972 to 1975.
In addition to these roles, Dr. Dvorak has been the state chairman of the National Band Association for Iowa and Arizona. He has served as an adjudicator as various musical festivals and a dean of students. Dr. Dvorak prepared for a career in music education by first earning a BS from the University of South Dakota. He continued at the institution to receive a MusM in 1965. Following this, he attended Arizona State University, receiving an EdD in 1973. During Dr. Dvorak’s doctoral work, he developed a series of self-instruction materials to learn basic repairs of music (band) instruments. He created these materials knowing this information would be helpful to future band directors as they don’t receive this training at higher education institutions other than a single workshop or a one-unit course. These materials also help musicians, teachers, and schools that teach the occupation of instrument repair.
He is a lifetime member of the Music Educator’s Conference and received an Outstanding Educator of America Award in 1974 and 1975. In 1962, he was nominated by the college teaching staff and was awarded Who’s Who in American Universities and Colleges. Recently, Dr. Dvorak was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement feature with Marquis Who’s Who.
